The suburb of Balmain in Sydney is blessed. Blessed because it has more pubs per capita than any other city suburb in Australia. So the lovely folk of Balmain quite clearly love a drink, but until a couple of years ago the corner pub was the only option for a beer with your mates or a glass of wine, but that is changing with a handful of small bars now opening.
The Cottage is a charming oasis perched right on busy Darling Street which genuinely feels like an English Cottage complete with English country garden out front. The minute you step off the main drag and up the path through the garden to the bar inside you’ll feel like you’ve left all the craziness of inner-city living a long way behind. You’re spoilt for options at The Cottage for places to settle in – there’s the garden courtyard out front, the main bar and restaurant area just inside the front door, there’s a fabulous balcony overlooking the front garden area, a small courtyard out back and a room upstairs, replete in colourful vintage furniture. Choice is also delivered in spades when it comes to wine and beer at The Cottage – a better than average choice of wine and bottled beer and with over 30 wines available by the glass. There’s a wood fired pizza oven too, courtesy of the former incarnation of this beautiful old house which was an Italian restaurant, so the pizzas are top notch!
