The good folk of Newtown have been waiting forever for the old train station building to be renovated and for some sparkling new busniesses to open up in the building and now, finally, they can relax, because there’s a new bar/restaurant that occupies the top floor of that old building. Onyx is a swish new establishment that occupies the space that once belonged to a dodgy night club. But the seedy days of that old nightclub are a distant memory now that the very spacious and charming Onyx has opened up offering locals a great mix of cocktails, food and live music.
Onyx can feel a bit more like a restaurant than a bar, but there are some great tables right alongside the windows that face onto King Street that definitely make you feel like you’re in a bar. And the bar area itself is grand and definitely puts you in the mood for a cocktail upon arrival and one more before you leave. But don’t just start and finish with a cocktail, make sure you give the menu a good hard look because it is extensive. From the (seemingly) mandatory share plate and tapas style snacks, to full serves of lush chicken and fish dishes and they’ll put together a decent burger for you too. And if all that hasn’t filled you to the brim they’ve got a list of desserts to round of the evening ever so nicely.
As we’ve said so often, King Street in Newtown is a stand out in the Sydney drinking and dining scene and now there is a terrific venue right in middle of King Street that has so many bases covered. Next time you’re planning a ‘King Street crawl’, put Onyx on your list and leave room for some food – you’ll just love it!
