So, there’s a bar on Stanley Street called Kubrick’s. Get it? Yep a bar built in honour of the legendary film director is the latest to open in East Sydney and this really is a one of the best pockets in Sydney to do a small bar crawl. There’s Love Tily Devine, Red Lily, The Owl House, The Hazy Rose and now Kubrick’s, with Pocket Bar and Downtown at The Commons just up the road too.
Most small bars like to fill up their walls and their space with all sorts of knick-knacks, trinkets and ‘stuff’ you’d generally find in a 2nd hand or vintage store, but Kubrick’s bucks that trend and presents itself with a minimalist interior and clean lines. There’s some rather futuristic looking shapes hanging from one of the walls at Kubrick’s, presumably a nod to Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. There’s a ‘back room’ at this bar, which was a garage at one point in time, but it’s now a great little space to relax in with a hot date or take over the entire space with a bunch of friends. Out front there’s a couple of tables and this is possibly the most perfect spot in East Sydney – street side, smack bang in the middle of one Sydney’s most delightful streets, with your favourite drink watching the world pass by.
The drinks at Kubrick’s are of the highest caliber, and they stock some sensational small batch spirits. If you’ve not yet tried Melbourne Gin Company’s gin, you really should, it’s spectacular! More than good enough to drink neat, so suffice to say it’s divine with your favourite mixer or in a cocktail.
In bars, as with real estate, it’s all about location, location, location and Kubrick’s is definitely nestled in one the very best locations in all of Sydney. If you’re a local drop in and say “hi” to Dee and the crew, or if it’s been a while since you visited Stanley Street then make the trip in, drop into Kubrick’s and if you’re really lucky you might score one of the tables out front. If you do, you’ll probably never want to leave!
